Common Wasp Locations Around Your Home

Because they're a flying insect, you will find wasps just about anywhere outside. Wasp nests, however, are usually found in a covered space that's secluded enough to not be at risk for getting destroyed. Overhangs like porches, underneath decks, and in rafters of sheds or garages are common places to come across a wasp nest.

Wasps that are in or close to a nest will be the most aggressive, because they're protecting. As wasps wander away from the nest, they will be more docile but still give them their space. You might notice wasps sitting on the surface of water. If you look closely, they are actually drinking! Wasps will also take a sip of any sugary drinks they come across, so if you're relaxing by the pool with a soda, make sure you're covering your drink.

What You Should Do If You Find a Wasp's Nest

Like we previously mentioned, wasps are the most aggressive when they're around their nest, so if you find a nest, don't mess with it if it's active. Wait until you are sure that the nest is vacant before removing it. Place the nest in a sealable bag and throw it away in an outdoor trash can.

If you find a nest in the ground, you have actually discovered a yellow jacket nest. Yellow jackets are actually a type of wasp and are very aggressive. If you're trimming grass under a large tree, you will usually feel a yellow jacket's sting before you realize you're in trouble. If you find yourself in this situation, get away from the area quickly since yellow jackets can sting multiple times.

If you spot a nest in a spot that's tricky to reach or the nest always seems to be active, it's time to give BREDA Pest Management a call. Our pest technicians can safely and thoroughly remove the nest and treat your home for any lingering wasps. Because of their known aggression, it's always safer to bring in the pros who have been trained and equipped to remove any stinging insect presence.
