What You Need
Spreader for granules
Did You Know?
Ticks are arachnids. Meaning, they are more closely related to spiders and scorpions than insects.
Ticks have four life stages: egg, larva (infant), nymph (immature), and adult (mature).
How to Eliminate Ticks in your yard
Make sure to eliminate all leaf litter and keep the grass mowed frequently and low. If you have a playground area, the best location would be in the middle of the yard. A lot of homeowners want to put the playground area in the shade, but this is the area ticks enjoy. Also, make sure there aren't tree branches shading and covering the playground equipment. Remember, ticks will wait on low lying branches for a host to come by and then hitch a ride.
Since ticks don't like sunny areas, focus on the shaded areas and low lying branches, shrubs and plants. By treating the low lying branches with a product labeled for ticks, you are creating a 'safe zone' for your family. We would recommend using a Bifenthrin (active ingredient) based product in a liquid form and in a granule form. The liquid would need to be reapplied every 30 days during tick season. BUT, always read your label on how often to apply the products and how much to use.
Also Keep in Mind
Pemethrin based clothing has become popular amongst hunters. This clothing has been treated with a chemical and helps keep ticks and mosquitoes off. This type of clothing has become popular within the last 10 years and we don't have a lot of research on the long term effects of these products. The cons to this product is it does require long sleeves and it is expensive. However, most of the permethrin based clothing lasts 70+ washes.
